Centrifugal Juicer
The Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Juice Extractor is a centrifugal juicer. Centrifugal means that produce is ground by fast-spinning blades that push the pulp away from the center of the juicer.
Where most centrifugal juicers push this pulp to the sides which can often clog up and deter the juicing process, this unit has an external pulp collector that simply moves the pulp to the outside container.
This is incredibly useful for cleaning purposes, and it means the user doesn’t have to pause the juicing process to move the pulp.
However, centrifugal juicers often don’t make the most of their produce due to the speed of the blades. The pulp will come out quite damp, which could be extra juice if the juicer was designed to squeeze it all out. Centrifugal juicers are best for convenience and speed, but not for producing a high quality of juice.
Easy to use?
This juicer is incredibly easy to use. It doesn’t come with too many parts, so the removal process for cleaning and extracting the pulp is quick.
Centrifugal juicers are notorious for their user-friendliness due to the large feed chute and fast-spinning blades. If you are a beginner and just starting your juicing journey, centrifugal juicers are much easier to use than masticating juicers (which press the juice out of the produce).
All you have to do is drop your produce down the feed chute, and the juicer does the work for you! Although, we do recommend removing any peel or pits from the produce beforehand as this can alter the taste of the juice.
Easy to clean?
All of the parts of this juicer are removable and dishwasher-safe to provide a quick clean. However, we don’t recommend simply putting these parts in the dishwasher.
It is best to rinse the juicer parts in warm water before putting them in the dishwasher. You should do this just after the juice has been made to prevent any remaining juice from sticking to the plastic. Also, most juicers come with a cleaning brush to scrub the edges and corners - which this Hamilton Beach unit does offer.
For the pulp extractor, if you find the cleaning process a bit too tedious, you can put a plastic bag or Saran wrap in the container prior to juicing. Then, you can simply remove the bag to throw the pulp away.
What is the juice like?
If you compared the juice between a centrifugal and masticating juicer, you may not taste a difference. However, as centrifugal juicers can waste potential juice in the remaining pulp due to the fast-spinning blades, there is a lack of quantity.
Not only this, but these fast blades pump more oxygen into the juice - which creates oxidation. Oxidation is when the enzymes of a fresh fruit or vegetable are exposed to too much oxygen, which decreases the nutritional content. Imagine you cut an apple in half and leave it out in the open - it will turn brown due to oxidation.
Whilst the juice quality of this centrifugal juicer is good and tastes nice, it will not offer the maximum nutritional value compared to slow juice pressers. The oxidation of the juice means it can only last 24 hours when refrigerated, as opposed to juice from slow juicers which can last up to 72 hours.
In short, if you want juice that offers the exact same nutrients as fresh fruit or vegetables prior to juicing, a slow press juicer may be more beneficial for you. If you just want to make tasty and quick juices, this centrifugal juicer works just fine!
What can this unit juice?
Due to the powerful motor, the size of the feed chute, and the fast-spinning blades, centrifugal juicers are ideal for juicing dense produce and fruits. This includes:
- Celery
- Apples
- Sweet potato
- Oranges
- Lemon
- Beetroot
- Pineapple
- Carrots
- Lime
The list goes on and on!
However, one downfall to centrifugal juicers is that they cannot successfully juice leafy greens and soft produce such as wheatgrass or spinach.
This is because the produce will essentially just be mashed up in the fast-spinning blades and it will produce little to no juice. Likewise, the blades will not be able to handle nuts and ingredients to make almond or soy milk.
If you are looking for a juicer specifically for leafy greens and soft produce, we recommend finding a masticating slow press juicer.
Final Verdict
The Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Juice Extractor is a great investment for those looking to kick start their juicing journey.
If you’re looking for a fast and convenient appliance that can make juice quickly, this centrifugal juicer is ideal for speed. Little food prep is needed when you can literally drop the produce into the feed chute, allowing the juicer to do the work for you.
However, it is important to be aware that the powerful motor and blades make this juicer pretty noisy - not ideal for early morning juice-making! It is not suitable for making juice out of leafy greens, nor will it offer the most nutritional value to the juice due to the increased oxidation.
Regardless, if you’re looking for a good juicer to match your budget and convenience-based needs, this juicer is a great appliance for you.
